Allied Health & Medicine
The Allied Health Pathway offers students a distinctive and comprehensive opportunity to explore the healthcare field. This program imparts essential skills necessary for a rewarding medical career. A standout feature of the curriculum is the extensive training to become a certified phlebotomy technician, where students learn various competencies including conducting safe venipuncture procedures for blood sample collection, performing basic laboratory tasks, and handling sharps and biohazardous materials. Phlebotomists find employment in physician's offices, blood banks, hospitals, and other settings where blood draws and lab work are needed.
Furthermore, students receive thorough instruction in becoming certified EKG technicians. They acquire diverse skills such as electrode placement, lead wire connections, electrode application to patients, ensuring proper contact, teaching relaxation and breathing techniques to patients, inputting patient data into EKG machines, and understanding cardiac terminology, the cardiac cycle, coronary blood supply, common heart disorders and diseases, and blood pressure and vital signs. Graduating as a Certified Phlebotomist (CPT) and Electrocardiogram Technician (EKG tech) through NHA's credentialing agency allows students to earn two industry-recognized certifications, opening doors to various healthcare roles.
In addition to these critical certifications, students can participate in the Stop the Bleed program to enhance their ability to respond effectively in emergencies. They also receive training in life-saving techniques through American Heart Association CPR training. This allied health course not only equips students with the knowledge and skills necessary for a successful healthcare career but also empowers them to make a meaningful impact on the lives of those they serve.
It's important to note that students who enroll in this course must be in their junior or senior year and have the capacity to engage in mandatory clinical experiences, which are an integral part of the certification process.
Students must be in their SENIOR year to take this course. This certification requires students to have 25 live needle punctures and 5 capillary sticks for eligibility of testing. Therefore, to appropriately facilitate student needs and ensure many requirements are met, we limit this opportunity to our seniors only.
